Low Dose Naltrexone

Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist that is FDA-approved to treat alcohol addiction and to block the effect of opioids. Naltrexone is commercially available as a 50mg oral tablet and as an extended-release suspension for injection.

Low-dose naltrexone therapy has a large following among multiple sclerosis patients, both in the U.S. and abroad. There is a great deal of anecdotal information regarding the use of this therapy; it is suggested that it may prevent relapses and even reduce the progression of the disease. Doctors, organizations and patients have called for more research into the use of this drug. Currently, patients whose doctors prescribe low-dose naltrexone typically have the medication custom-made by a compounding pharmacy.

It has been proposed that naltrexone acts by reducing apoptosis of oligodenendrocytes.
